The Nigerian government has secured funding to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure and plans to procure two new communication satellites, according to the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. This initiative aims to deepen internet access, promote digital inclusion, and build a $1 trillion economy. The announcement was made at the Global Privacy Day event organized by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC). The minister also highlighted the government's commitment to data protection and digital skills development.

The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy announced on January 29, 2026, that the Nigerian federal government has secured the necessary funding to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic infrastructure throughout the nation. This significant development was revealed during an event commemorating Global Privacy Day, organized by the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The minister also disclosed plans for the procurement of two new communication satellites, signaling a major push to enhance digital connectivity and drive economic growth. The announcement underscores the government's commitment to improving internet access and digital inclusion, crucial components of President Bola Tinubu's vision to build a $1 trillion economy founded on shared prosperity. The minister emphasized that this expansive digital infrastructure project, initiated in August 2025 with the initial announcement of the fiber optic cable plan, is not merely aspirational but is well underway, with approximately 60 percent of the project already completed. He highlighted the importance of this infrastructure in enabling economic growth and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians, emphasizing the administration's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of digital advancement are broadly shared, encompassing access to essential services such as roads, schools, hospitals, and adequate compensation for public sector employees. \Beyond the extensive fiber optic deployment, the ministry is spearheading other vital initiatives to boost digital access across the country. These include the establishment of approximately 4,000 telecommunications towers in rural areas under the MilCAP program and the acquisition of two new communication satellites. This move is particularly significant, as Nigeria currently stands as the sole West African nation with an operational communication satellite, and the addition of two more will further enhance the nation's capacity to connect every region of the country and extend connectivity to neighboring nations. Furthermore, the minister highlighted the substantial investments in digital skills training and development, positioning Nigeria's technology talent accelerator as the largest of its kind. He stressed the importance of a skilled workforce in fully harnessing the potential of digital technologies to drive economic transformation. The minister also issued a crucial warning about the critical need for robust data protection measures to preserve public trust in the digital economy. He stated that without adequate safeguards, the expansion of connectivity could erode public confidence, deterring citizens from utilizing the digital tools designed to transform the economy. Preserving trust is paramount, he asserted, as it is the foundation upon which the success of the digital economy rests. \The minister emphasized that the protection of data and privacy is the cornerstone of fostering trust in the digital ecosystem. He referenced the enactment of the Nigerian Data Protection Commission Act as a clear indication of the government's unwavering dedication to safeguarding the rights, dignity, and data of its citizens as Nigeria accelerates its digital transformation. He underscored that the success of Nigeria's digital economy will rely on the synergy of infrastructure development, talent acquisition, and, critically, the fostering of public trust. The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Vincent Olatunji, also spoke at the event, outlining the commission's efforts to strengthen the enforcement of data protection laws. These efforts include judicial training programs, international collaborations, and engagements with security agencies. He also announced that the NDPC would soon publish a list of non-compliant higher education institutions, aiming to promote greater accountability within the sector. Olatunji underscored that effective enforcement, robust public awareness campaigns, and extensive collaboration are vital to sustaining public trust as Nigeria's digital economy expands and evolves. A notable highlight of the Global Privacy Day event was the presentation of an award to the minister, recognizing him as a global data protection champion, a testament to his dedication to advancing data privacy and security within the nation
