Ikechukwu Ohaka, the Environment and Conservation Officer of MAJI, delivered this counsel in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, during a media training workshop. The training, aptly titled 'Harnessing Environmental Data For Reporting in the Niger Delta,' focused on equipping journalists with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the complexities of environmental data. Ohaka highlighted the considerable challenges journalists face in accessing data due to the classification of simple environmental documents and bureaucratic hurdles within certain government agencies. This often hinders journalists' ability to gather essential data effectively, ultimately impacting their capacity to produce comprehensive and compelling environmental stories. He therefore stressed the importance of journalists partnering with research-based institutions and organizations. These partnerships would provide access to credible, verified data, which can be used to write compelling environmental stories and hold government accountable for environmental issues and policies in the Niger Delta region. The training underscored the growing disconnect between scientific environmental data and the public’s understanding of its significance. This gap, Ohaka noted, has further weakened public engagement and policy responses to critical environmental concerns across the Niger Delta. He emphasized the need for journalists to be well-versed in environmental data collection and analysis. This would empower them to raise public awareness, promote environmental consciousness about potential hazards, and advocate for informed government policies and regulations. \Ohaka further elaborated on how journalists could transform environmental reporting. He asserted that compelling environmental stories should be driven by insightful data that promotes constructive citizen action. To tackle the obstacles in using environmental data, including limited access and government restrictions, he advised collaboration with research institutions and open-source data platforms. These resources would provide valuable information and tools to enable accurate and insightful reporting. The training also introduced participants to a range of practical data collection tools and techniques. These included sensor-based monitoring systems, field sampling methodologies, the application of low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the use of satellite imagery, and the utilization of mobile data applications to enhance data gathering in the field. This hands-on training aimed to equip journalists with a comprehensive understanding of diverse methods to enhance their ability to report effectively on environmental issues. \Dr. Prince Eze, speaking on 'Effective Advocacy Using Environmental Data,' emphasized that effective advocacy must be built on credible and verifiable data. He acknowledged the detrimental effects of weak data systems on policy decisions. He urged journalists to adopt a more strategic and evidence-based approach in their engagement with stakeholders and in shaping public discourse. Eze explained how reliable data strengthens the ability to create impactful advocacy campaigns. This approach would make journalists’ reporting more credible and effective in highlighting and addressing environmental problems. The training served as a crucial platform to prepare media professionals to become informed advocates for environmental protection. Journalists were encouraged to use reliable information in their reports. The aim was to ensure that their stories were persuasive and capable of influencing decision-making. The goal was to equip journalists with the necessary skills and resources to overcome challenges. It would help them to improve reporting standards. This would ultimately help to promote environmental sustainability and accountability in the Niger Delta.
