The Senate of Nigeria has issued a stern warning, threatening to obtain arrest warrants for several high-ranking government officials who have repeatedly failed to appear before its Public Accounts Committee (SPAC).
The officials implicated include Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Central Bank Governor Yemi Cardoso, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) Group Chief Executive Officer Mele Kyari, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman/Chief Executive Officer Zacch Adedeji, and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service Adewale Adeniyi.SPAC Chairman Ahmed Aliyu Wadada stated that the committee has extended multiple invitations to these officials to address queries raised in audit reports by the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation (AuGF). Wadada emphasized that the officials' disregard for Senate summons constitutes an affront to the National Assembly and an insult to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He asserted that no one in Nigeria is above the law and that even the President himself attends the National Assembly to present the budget, demonstrating respect for the institution.Wadada warned that any official who receives an invitation from SPAC and fails to respond or appear will face an arrest warrant. He called on President Tinubu to take action against any appointee who demonstrates disrespect for the National Assembly and its mandate. Wadada specifically highlighted the FIRS CEO's refusal to appear before the committee despite eight invitations and the NNPCL's consistent lack of engagement. He emphasized that the committee is entrusted with a mandate by the Nigerian people and expects the same level of respect from government officials
