Fire at Lagos Airport Severely Impacts Air-to-Ground Communication

A fire at Murtala Muhammed International Airport's terminal one has completely disrupted air-to-ground communication, forcing air traffic controllers to rely on backup systems. The incident led to a temporary suspension of inbound flights. NAMA is working to restore full functionality and improve safety measures.

Farouk Umar, managing director of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency , says the fire incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal one has completely affected its air-to-ground communication.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday at MMIA, Umar said air traffic controllers are currently relying on backup equipment to sustain operations. “The fire has affected our air-to-ground communication completely. What we are using to sustain air traffic service now is the backup. We have a lot to do when we are out of the situation,” the NAMA MD said.“It is going to be very difficult for me to tell the magnitude of the loss; it will take us a while to do so. “What we saw was a huge loss as far as communication is concerned. Other air traffic services were really disrupted. So we had no option at that time than to suspend inbound aircraft into Lagos.” He, however, noted that since flight operations resumed, communication, aerodrome approach, and air traffic control have remained uninterrupted.Umar commended the NAMA personnel for their swift response, assuring Nigerians and the flying public that the airspace remains safe. “The workers on ground actually put their lives in danger because they were supposed to run and leave the place, but they decided to stay and salvage the situation,” he said. The NAMA chief said the agency is now working to improve and build on the measures already implemented. “Hopefully by tomorrow or next, we will be able to move the mobile tower, but I want to assure Nigerians that the air-to-ground communication will remain uninterrupted,” Umar added.
