He died during the late 2022 COVID-19 surge, but much of what he taught me lives on. I hope he can hear my words.

I met my father in a dream last night. He sat on a stone by the roadside, quietly looking into the distance. When I approached him, he murmured to me, “I’ll take you to the station, I’ll take you to the station.” Hearing this, my chest felt congested, and tears welled up in my eyes. I sighed, picked him up and went back to the house, gently placed him on the bed, covered him with the quilt, and watched him fall asleep.

In my memory, my father seldom talked about himself to me, and never asked me about my studies; and I don’t remember him ever accompanying me in sports activities. In my memory, my father never made any plans for my life path, nor did he talk about such things after I grew up. My father was a hardworking, selfless man. His tireless action and giving nature were well-known in the communities in which we lived. In the 1960s, most Chinese people lived in a period of famine. Being rural, and with agricultural rearing, my father cultivated a small piece of land on the hillside to plant corn and soybeans in his spare time.

As precious as food was in those days, my father always shared it generously with his neighbours. He influenced and shaped my life by example, not words. Using his example, I learned how to raise my children, how to share with my neighbours, and more.
