A former Head, Department of History, Obafemi Awolowo University, emeritus Prof. Banji Akintoye, has accepted to serve as the leader of Yoruba nation.

Some Yoruba organisations had met in Ibadan on August 22 and elected Akintoye to lead Yoruba nation, but the 84-year-old Second Republic senator had not made public his response since then.

Akintoye, who hails from Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, said Yoruba land was “facing an invasion,” stressing that unrelenting killing, maiming and raping of its sons and daughters must stop. The new Yoruba leader said his election was not the first, saying Chief Obafemi Awolowo was elected Yoruba leader at a meeting in 1967 because of the dangers facing Yoruba people then.

“I hereby humbly respond ‘yes’ to your call, fully and gratefully confident that you all will rise and work in dedication and faithfully with me in all efforts to advance the best prospects, the best achievements and the right destiny for our Yoruba nation.
