Yankees showing interest in familiar face as hunt for infield upgrade begins

With Anthony Rizzo out for the foreseeable future and DJ LeMahieu struggling, the Yankees need to monitor the open market for possible acquisitions before next month's trade deadline.

Former Yankee Garrett Cooper is currently a free agent after being designated for assignment by both the Red Sox and Cubs earlier this season.

He’s only two years removed from making the All-Star Game, though, a .265 hitter in his career with some legitimate pop. Cooper hit .261 with a .752 OPS in 2022 with the Marlins. Last year, he played in a career-high 123 games, swatting a personal-best 17 home runs. If the plan is to bolster organizational depth at first base and add a right-handed bat with power, then Cooper would be a solid acquisition. In his career, Cooper is hitting .283 with a .801 OPS against left-handed pitching. He could theoretically platoon with Rice, who had trouble on Friday night against Braves southpaw Chris Sale and lefty reliever Dylan Lee.
