With a mere 0.6% GDP growth, 25% unemployment rate, exacerbated by the crisis in ESKOM, the state-owned electricity firm that has culminated into frequent power outages, Fitch rating agency has downgraded South Africa’s credit rating outlook to negative. The widening budget deficit arising from weaker growth and increased spending has been cited as the reasons for the downgrade.
