'Working against time': 27 schools airconditioned, another 1320 to go | jordsbaker

More than 1300 schools have put their hands up for airconditioning under the Cooler Classrooms program, but almost a year after the first round of recipients was announced, just 27 have so far received it.

Some 900 schools were approved for airconditioning in the first round of applications last November. Another 447 schools applied in the second round earlier this year, but those applications have yet to be approved.“As at 4 September 2019, the Cooler Classrooms Program has completed construction at 27 schools and commenced construction at 23 schools,” the department revealed at budget estimates hearings.

Work on the project would be able to intensify during school holidays, when children would not be disturbed by noise, Mr Scott said. “If you sit at 28 degrees in your classroom temperature, that’s four degrees, so eight per cent less learned, compared with someone who is in a 22-24 classroom and has the same intelligence as you,” said Dr Pfautsch.

“You have potentially less and less learned in those schools where you can’t bring airconditioning quickly enough.”
