Success Nwogu, Makurdi National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Independent National Electoral Commission, Mr Festus Okoye, has said INEC did not issue Imo State Governor Rochas Okoroc
ha a certificate of return after winning the Imo West senatorial poll on February 23 because the returning officer announced the result under duress.
Speaking during an interactive session with reporters in Makurdi on Friday, Okoye said it was the policy of the commission that certificates of return would not be issued when the results of polls were announced under duress. He said the returning officer for the Imo West senatorial election reported to the commission that he declared Okorocha the winner of the poll under duress.
Okoye also said INEC received similar reports from the National Assembly poll in Oju/Obi Federal Constituency in Benue State, as well as the House of Assembly elections in Niger and Akwa Ibom states. He said, “The commission has not given a certificate of return to anyone from Obi/Oju, the same thing with Agaye state constituency in Niger State. There is also another state constituency in Akwa Ibom. So as of today, there are four areas where declarations were made under duress and we said we will not give certificates of return to those individuals. “Some of them are already in court.
