Forest fires in Western Quebec and a new wildfire burning near Calabogie are contributing to hazy skies and smog advisories across a large swath of Eastern Ontario and Quebec.
A new wildfire burning since Sunday in the Centennial Lake area west of Ottawa has prompted the evacuation of area residents and the enforcement of a strict fire ban in North Frontenac and Addington Highlands townships as of noon Monday.
“The air quality has been much larger-scale, it hasn’t been any singular fire causing this,” Cheng said. “It has a cumulative effect, but most of the fires are in Quebec, and wind flow is transporting the smoke and smog into the Ottawa area.”Article content According to the advisory, air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke “can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour,” the agency stated.
“Unfortunately, we’re not seeing a lot of relief at all, waiting for any rain or precipitation,” Cheng said. “And even if there are showers in the forecast, it does come with the risk of lightning and thunderstorms. But we’re not seeing any large-scale steady rain that would help with this situation. It looks like this will be the pattern for the week.
