WHO says dexamethasone for only severe COVID-19 patients
The World Health Organisation has said dexamethasone should only be used to treat severely-ill COVID-19 patients.Director-General, WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said those with mild COVID-19 cases should not use the drug.
“There is no evidence this drug works for patients with mild disease or as a preventative measure, and it could cause harm,” he said. He, however, said “the next challenge is to increase production rapidly and equitably distribute dexamethasone worldwide, focusing on where it is needed most.“Fortunately, this is an inexpensive medicine and there are many dexamethasone manufacturers worldwide, who we are confident can accelerate production.”
“It is also important to check that suppliers can guarantee the quality, as there is a high risk of substandard or falsified products entering the market.”
