April 25, 2023 SaharaReporters had reported that Nigeria became the second country in the world to approve the use of R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine developed by the University of Oxford and manufactur
ed by the Serum Institute of India.The World Health Organisation on Tuesday stated that the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine given provisional approval by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control still needs to undergo more trials.
According to the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control , Mojisola Adeyeye, the vaccine is to address the prevention of malaria in children from five months to 36 months of age. However, WHO Country Representative to Nigeria Dr Walter Mulombo, restated the importance and efficacy of the RTSS vaccine adopted by countries like Ghana and Kenya.
