Here's what we know about the Indian Delta COVID-19 variant detected in Victoria's outbreak

Dr Toole said data from the UK showed that Delta was more infectious than other variants.

Victoria's Deputy Chief Health Officer Allen Cheng has said another way to think about the infectiousness is the R0 value, or how quickly the virus spreads if there are no mitigating measures such as distancing, masks or restrictions. Deakin University's chair of epidemiology Catherine Bennett said there was a broad consensus that the Kappa strain was slightly less infectious than the Delta strain.

Emergence of Delta COVID-19 variant a 'significant concern' | Sky News AustraliaEmergence of Delta COVID-19 variant a 'significant concern' | Sky News AustraliaVictoria Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton says the emergence of a new ‘delta’ variant in West Melbourne is of “significant concern”.\n\nGenomic sequencing of the two original West Melbourne cases overnight identified the presence of the B.1.617.2 variant which experts say is more transmissible and more resistant to COVID vaccines. \n\n“Sequencing has identified a new variant unrelated to all of the other cases in our cluster thus far in Melbourne and it’s a variant of significant concern,” Professor Sutton said. \n\n“The fact that it’s a variant different to all of our other cases means it is not related, in terms of transmission, with these cases. \n\n“It has not been linked to any sequence cases across Australia from hotel quarantine or anywhere else so it has not been linked in Victoria or any other jurisdictions.”\n\nProfessor Sutton says health officials are now looking “potential linkages” to trace how the variant was introduced into the community. \n\n“In terms of the ongoing sequencing, we will try to look at all other sequences, re-sequence to the fullest extent possible across Australia to see if there are any potential linkages to known cases,” he continued.\n\n“That includes those who have come through formal quarantine but also anyone else, maritime, airline, diplomatic and otherwise. \n\n“It’s obviously a concern that it is not linked to other cases but we are chasing down all of those primary case contacts for this family and looking into where it might have been acquired.”\n
