After weeks at sea, the CSIRO research vessel RV Investigator docks in Brisbane after gathering data about how the East Australian Current's warming waters are impacting the marine food chain.
"What we are doing is measuring temperature — we are measuring strength of current and where it's going."We are in a very privileged position because what happens on the south-east coast of Queensland really controls everything that happens all the way down to Tasmania."
"In Queensland, things are warming up but no faster than the global average, but further south, things areHe said there was a large variation in data, but particularly in the southern areas of the EAC, numbers indicate the current was generally becoming stronger and warmer. "The warmer the water is, the more readily that water will evaporate and end up as clouds and eventually rain, so we could be seeing some interesting shifts in the climate."We're only just starting to piece together the puzzle — we've got the pieces but they don't quite fit together yet, but that is why it is so important that we keep monitoring the EAC."
"This trip, coupled with a trip we did 18 months ago, is really the first investigation into the jellyfish fauna off the south-east Queensland coast," Professor Pitt said. She said the "sheer abundance" of some of the species of jellyfish was surprising.
