Workers at the Northern Territory's wastewater plants find some odd things in their sewage ponds, but that's nothing compared to what they've experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Headworks treatment coordinator Simon Brisbane said the 40-year-old ponds had been able to handleThey were not designed, however, to handle the amount of wipes which have recently found their way there.

"When you [flush anything else], it just causes more work and the potential for a higher cost and more odour issues and a poorer treatment process."The smell of success Steve Knight has been cleaning sewage ponds for 20 years and laments products that claim they can be flushed. Working in such a smelly environment, Mr Knight has been practicing physical distancing in the pub long before it was the norm.
