MCPSS announced the updated security plan during Wednesday's board meeting
) -Following a January shooting at Leflore High School, the Mobile County Public School System promised an enhanced security plan to hopefully prevent something like that from happening again.
Superintendent Chresal Threadgill outlined some of the new measures for the first time including these Evolv weapons detection systems for all middle and high schools. The school system says they cost around $100,000 each and they already have 20 of them installed at different schools. These will be different than traditional metal detectors which the school system says they tried at one school but it delayed school start time by an hour.
Also new this year will be limiting cell phone usage. Threadgill says each school will have a plan in place to collect phones if students bring them into the building. The school system says they’ve already tried the program at Chestang and Hankins middle schools. School board member Johnny Hatcher says it’s been successful after talking to Hankins’ principal.
Clear bags will also be required at all public schools and will be provided by the school system at no cost to parents. Threadgill says parents can buy clear backpacks now if they want but they won’t be mandatory until the 2025-2026 school year.
