I ride my bicycle to work most days. I can use bike lanes for most of the journey – through the streets of North and West Melbourne, and then along William Street. But I am one of the lucky ones. If my office were on King or Lonsdale street, I would have to jostle for position with much larger cars and trucks.
I do not think inspectors are the answer, as savvy evaders know how to get around them. We need to call it for what it is – stealing. It is lucky these people do not have cars that need petrol, or travel from the outer suburbs to the CBD for work and have to navigate the barriers at Flinders Street Station.
The history of the British empire is nothing to celebrate. Instead we should mark this event with sombre reflection, an acknowledgement of the damage done, and actions that work towards reconciliation with the people who were here long before the British set foot on land that has never belonged to them.I agree with your correspondent that overpopulation is an issue impacting on climate change.
The 15,000 men who served in Vietnam have deservedly been able to apply for Department of Veteran Affairs’ Gold Cards when they turned 70. I do note that a few years ago when Australian-sourced gas could be purchased overseas a lot cheaper than in Australia, those who were profiting were quick to argue the domestic price was not dependent on the foreign price. This is not an argument that they profess now.I have lost patience with the media and political focus on the high cost of non-renewable energy. We have benefited from our cavalier plundering of the planet and to try to save it, we will all have to pay some price.
