Things are no longer at ease for Mr Ganiyu Owolabi-Igbin and his wife, Abigail, since their son, Babajide, was killed by soldiers who freed a kidnap kingpin in Taraba State, Bala Hamisu , from police
custody.
“He meant everything to me,” he added grimly before taking a long pause. “I cannot finish telling you the good memories I have about him. I just hope the family will get justice to reduce our pains.” The police filed terrorism charges against Wadume along with the soldiers and policemen involved in the kidnapping and killing of the cops.
As a young man who every member of the family looked up to, Babajide’s death remains a nightmare hunting the memories of his parents and siblings. Coping with the reality that their benefactor had been killed in his prime is a burden too much to bear. Owolabi-Igbin told Sunday PUNCH that since Babajide died, grief had taken the centre stage in the family once known for bliss and tranquility.
“There was a time he wanted to join the military. He always said he wanted to die serving Nigeria. All I want is justice. My son and his colleagues must not die in vain. The soldiers who killed them must be brought to book.” “The last time we saw was when he followed his team to arrest Evans in Lagos. He would always tell me that his job was tough and that I should pray for him. I always prayed for him,” she disclosed before bursting into tears.
“On April 3, which was his birthday, all the family members were crying. It was our neighbours who tried to console us. His father is now battling stroke as a result of his death. Any time I remember what I went through before I gave birth to him, I curse his killers.”
