The Eid-El-Fitri celebration did not go as planned for many workers in Zamfara State as they lamented the non-payment of their salaries by Governor Bello Matawalle-led administration. The aggrieved workers lambasted the governor for allowing the Muslim faithful to celebrate last week’s Sallah on an empty stomach. They accused him of punishing them because of the outcome of the 2023 governorship election in the state which he lost to Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

According to some of the workers who spoke to SaharaReporters, Matawalle vowed not to pay them ‘a dime till he hands over’ to the new leader.“Hunger and confusion in Zamfara as Governor Matawalle has refused to pay workers’ salaries since losing election. He has also vowed not to pay a dime till he hands over. We workers celebrated Sallah on an empty stomach. The worst Sallah most of us experienced in our life is that of 2023; no food, nothing,” a worker told SaharaReporters.
