Police apprehended 46 undocumented immigrants suspected to be from Malawi and Zimbabwe while they were allegedly en route to a farm in Piketberg. The arrests were made after authorities received a tip about a suspicious truck transporting approximately 67 individuals from the direction of Paarl towards Porterville.
, the executive director of the rural and farmworkers development organisation, Billy Classen, was driving between Porterville and Gouda when he noticed a group of men inside the truck. Concerned about the situation, he contacted traffic officer Beikom Neehlin, who responded promptly.
Upon reaching the police station, a few individuals abruptly jumped from the truck and attempted to flee. Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed the arrests, disclosing that the apprehended individuals were primarily from Malawi and Zimbabwe. They were largely residing in Mbekweni and were en route to employment on a farm in the Piketberg region.
Ray van Rooy, the mayor of Bergrivier, acknowledged awareness of the incident and voiced growing community concerns. He lamented the recurring pattern of such occurrences and raised questions about labour contractors responsible for bringing individuals into their communities.
