MEMBERS of the House of Representatives from Southern Kaduna have raised the alarm over imminent coordinated attacks by militias and armed herdsmen on communities during Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
The lawmakers, while addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, said warring communities in Southern Kaduna and parts of Katsina State were now engaging militias to fight each other.The caucus said it had identified herdsmen and farmers’ clashes, forceful land grabbing by non-natives of Southern Kaduna, reprisals and banditry as some of the major causes of the killings and hostilities in the area.
Leading the lawmakers, the Minority Whip of the House, Mr Gideon Gwani, while responding to questions from journalists, faulted Governor Nasir el-Rufai for allegedly refusing to recognise the Southern Kaduna Peoples Union and its advices, stating that the people must enjoy their constitutional right of association.
Gwani said, “When there is a curfew, what happens is that we have security inside the main towns. Meanwhile, these attacks are not recorded in the main towns, but at the periphery and boundaries of our communities. That is one of the reasons our people feel that the security are not doing enough.” Gwani said, “We have informed the security agents. I have told my DPO to extend that information to his superiors and he has taken that information seriously. But the attacks are still going on.
