After years of evading capture, a notorious Nigerian drug baron was arrested by the NDLEA, marking a major victory in the fight against international drug trafficking.
After 17 years of operating in the shadows, a notorious drug baron , Ogbonnaya Kevin Jeff, has been apprehended by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ). The 59-year-old, wanted internationally for his role in a vast drug trafficking network, was arrested at his hideout in Lagos on February 12, 2025. His arrest follows years of pursuit by the NDLEA , aided by an Interpol Red Notice and information from the National Intelligence Service of South Korea.
NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Marwa, announced the arrest at a press briefing in Abuja on March 3, 2025. He emphasized that Ogbonnaya's capture is a significant victory in the agency's ongoing campaign against major drug traffickers. Marwa detailed how Ogbonnaya had recruited young Nigerians as couriers to smuggle illicit substances into South Korea, accumulating billions of naira in profits. He laundered these proceeds through the importation of electronics and other goods. The search of Ogbonnaya's residence yielded a trove of evidence, including multiple Nigerian international passports with Korean visas, belonging to individuals linked to his operation. A stockpile of illicit substances was also discovered in a storehouse on his property. Marwa revealed that Ogbonnaya had previously served a prison sentence in South Korea in 2007 for drug trafficking, but upon deportation to Nigeria in 2008, he resumed his criminal activities, orchestrating operations remotely from Nigeria while maintaining connections with accomplices across Africa. The NDLEA boss stressed that Ogbonnaya's arrest sends a clear message that Nigeria will not be a safe haven for drug cartels
