Podcasting reached a tipping point in 2019 - no longer the miniscule cousin of traditional radio, it's gone mainstream.

Supplied: Ollie WardsJames Cridland spoke of the explosion in podcasting contentWhile OzPod's 2019 survey found that one in two people claimed to be overwhelmed by the choice of podcasts available, others countered with the fact that no-one ever complains about the millions of books or songs available.

Keynote speaker Owen Grover, head of podcast app Pocket Casts, said"this is not a medium that's reached its ceiling yet".they'd remain an open app, even though other apps such as Luminary and Spotify have made some podcast content exclusive to their platforms."This idea to ring-fence content when we're trying to grow the medium broadly is madness at this point.

"It's like a little goldmine that's sitting in people's homes that has the ability to surprise and delight users but we need to educate them on how to use it." Nicol said there's a tension between how consumers use a smart speaker and what a podcast currently looks like. Currently a podcast is a one-way immersive experience whereas a smart speaker is used in your day-to-day life when you're busy and you're looking for utility and information rather than that immersive experience," he explained.
