Shortly after the commencement of voting on Saturday, the online news stories and photographs by different media channels captured the voter apathy that befell the governorship and state Houses of Ass
embly elections.showed the picture of ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission and voting boxes with no voters in sight. Its headline read: “Electoral officials, empty ballot boxes wait for voters in Abuja.”said: “Bello laments low turnout of voters.” That was in reference to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.had a headline that read: “Why there is low turnout in Lagos, by observers.
The second reason was the violence and intimidation that characterised the February 23 elections. As many as 40 people were said to be killed. Voters were beaten, harassed and their votes burnt in some states. Some electoral officers were abducted in some states. Many people feared that the March 9 polls would be violent too. Indeed, there was violence in the March 9 polls.
The sad thing about the voter apathy that characterised last weekend’s elections was that it was a dip in the electoral progress of Nigeria. It was a return to the years of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as president. From 1999 when he came into office until 2007 when he left, Obasanjo gave Nigeria elections that were not credible, transparent, free nor fair.
Under President Umaru Yar’Adua, there was no visible change in the electoral process. Even though Yar’Adua acknowledged that the election that brought him in as president in 2007 fell below acceptable standards, he did not do anything concrete to change the face of elections in Nigeria.
