The northern suburbs outbreak emerged this week after a year 5 student who should have been isolating as a close contact of his infected family members attended classes on Monday and Tuesday, before testing positive on Wednesday.The boy's attendance, which has been attributed to a misunderstanding with his parents, has put about 800 people into isolation, including 83 families connected to his school.East Preston Islamic College, where a drive-through testing site opened on Saturday.

However, residents in five northern suburbs - Dallas, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Preston and West Heidelberg - remain on high alert. Victoria’s commander of testing and community engagement, Jeroen Weimar, said while it may be grand final day the department will continue to provide community support and operate testing sites.

East Preston Islamic College principal Ekrem Ozyurek said he believed a misunderstanding led to the family sending their child to school.
