The USAID headquarters in Washington, D.C. was unexpectedly closed on Monday, February 3, 2025, with all staff instructed to work remotely. The decision came after an email sent to employees late Sunday night, citing the direction of agency leadership. The closure follows reports of a potential executive order from Trump to dismantle USAID and transfer its operations to the State Department. Two top USAID security officials have also been placed on administrative leave for allegedly refusing to grant access to classified material to personnel from Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Staff of the United States Agency for International Development at the headquarters in Washington were asked to stay at home on Monday.

“At the direction of Agency leadership, the USAID headquarters at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, D.C. will be closed to Agency personnel on Monday, February 3, 2025,” the email reads. Most of these funds are channeled into disaster relief efforts while promoting development and global health.Speaking during an X Spaces stream around midnight on Sunday, Musk said he checked in with Trump a few times who said: “Yes we are shutting it down”.
