A US medical centre, Jersey City Medical Center has appointed Ije Akunyili as the first black Chief Medical Officer of the hospital. Dr Akunyili is the daughter of a former Nigerian professor, Dora Akunyili. Her appointment was announced in a statement released by the centre on Wednesday via its website, stating that Akunyili’s appointment took effect from January 2, 2023. Her mother, Dora was the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria from 2001 to 2008.

January 13, 2023A US medical centre, Jersey City Medical Center has appointed Ije Akunyili as the first black Chief Medical Officer of the hospital.Her appointment was announced in a statement released by the centre on Wednesday via its website, stating that Akunyili’s appointment took effect from January 2, 2023.

She died at a specialist cancer hospital in India on June 7, 2014 after a two-year battle with uterine cancer. “Previously, Dr. Akunyili served as the chair of emergency medicine at Waterbury Hospital, a Level II trauma teaching hospital. There she was the change agent who led a dynamic team in dramatically reducing the lengths of stay, improving overall performance across multiple patient-centered metrics, and increasing physician staffing. She was awarded the 2019 Medical Director of the Year Award for the impressive turnaround of the Waterbury Hospital Emergency Department.
