US appeals British judge decision to keep Julian Assange in the UK

Lawyers acting on behalf of the US government have challenged a British judge's decision to block the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to face espionage charges in the United States.A UK judge blocked Mr Assange's extradition after finding it was likely he would kill himself in the US

The 50-year-old Australian listened into the hearing by video link from London's high-security Belmarsh prisonClair Dobbin, a British lawyer who represented US authorities during a High Court preliminary hearing, said that District Judge Vanessa Baraitser based her decision not to extradite Mr Assange on a "predicted risk of suicide" rather than the risk at the time the matter was before her.

After skipping bail to avoid extradition to Sweden alleged sexual assault, he spent almost seven years holed up inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in the UK capital.
