'There is no justification for the scenes that unfolded last night'

A transport boss has condemned violence which broke out in Manchester last night during which a bus driver was assaulted and riot police attacked. Protestors gathered in large numbers outside the Holiday Inn hotel in Oldham Road, Newton Heath at about 6pm.

During the incident a bus driver was attacked. Greater Manchester Police said the driver stepped out of his cab after protestors damaged the bus. A group of young masked men had jumped into the path of the bus and smashed a wing mirror.TfGM’s Chief Network Officer, Danny Vaughan, said: "There is no justification for the scenes that unfolded last night that left a bus driver injured and a vehicle damaged, and we wish them a quick recovery.

As the demonstration escalated the group spilled into the main Oldham Road, jumping in front of passing cars, pelting innocent motorists with beer bottles, and charging at police officers. GMP Tactical Aid Unit vans were despatched to the area and riot police formed a line but were pelted with bricks, stones, and bottles.

Local Newton Heath councillor, John Flanagan slammed those involved in the "sickening" incident as "mindless idiots". He said: "I would like to condemn these mindless thugs, attacking innocent men who are asylum seekers. They have been there for months and we have not had any issues or problems. They have been in a place of safety.
