'When the looting starts, the shooting starts.'
The trigger was the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, at the hands of police in Minneapolis last Monday.
Protesters call for justice for George Floyd during his brother's visit, outside the Cup Foods on June 1, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. - Thousands of National Guard troops patrolled major US cities after five consecutive nights of protests over racism and police brutality that boiled over into arson and looting, sending shock waves through the country.
Police have filed rubber bullets, tear gas, stun grenades and pepper spray at demonstrators who have launched projectiles, including water bottles and rocks, at officers. While the president has acknowledged Floyd's death to be a"grave tragedy," he also sparked outrage and accusations that he was stoking further violence when he tweeted:"When the looting starts, the shooting starts."
