PETALING JAYA: Eleven areas in Malaysia have recorded unhealthy air pollutant index (API) levels – which is the highest number of places affected since the start of this year’s haze season.
According to Department of Environment data, seven places in Sarawak along with four in Peninsular Malaysia had API readings of between 101 and 200.
API levels at Johan Setia in Klang, Selangor was 104, while Cheras and Batu Muda in Kuala Lumpur had API levels of 106 and 107.Forest fires in Sumatra are being blamed for the unhealthy API levels in these west coast areas. Other areas in the country had “moderate” API levels, with the lowest reading recorded in Sandakan, at 54.
The Meteorological Department had forecast isolated thunderstorms in coastal areas in Selangor in the morning today, before moving to inland areas.An API reading of between 0 and 50 is good while 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy, and 301 and above is deemed hazardous.
