The media lawyers network is designed to help journalists who often bear the brunt of attacks and intimidation by forces that undermine press freedom and the safety of journalists.

The UNESCO’s International Programme for the Development of Communication , the Pan African Lawyers Union and the Congress of African Journalists have concluded arrangements to establish the African Media Lawyers’ Network .Regional Adviser for the Safety of Journalists in the Liaison Office to the African Union, said this in a statement on Wednesday night.

“This was deemed necessary to provide the much needed professional and legal support, including but not limited to national and sub-regional media lawyers’ networks. According to her, the primary target of this network is journalists who often bear the brunt of attacks and intimidation by forces that undermine press freedom and the safety of journalists.

“This will empower and create a supporting base, which will improve the implementation rate of the judicial decisions on cases related to journalists in AU Member States,” Ms Gachungi said. Mr Isiguzo said: “First and foremost, AMLN will provide essential legal support and protection for journalists who often face threats and intimidation while carrying out their vital work., AMLN ensures that journalists will have access to legal expertise, which is crucial in defending media freedom, journalist safety, and access to information.

“AMLN is not only about legal support but also about creating a safer and more conducive space for journalism, where female journalists can thrive without fear.
