Tension is brewing in the Isikan community in Akure, Ondo State, over the decision of the Deji of Akure to appoint a new quarter chief for the community, PETER DADA writes
Three towns – Isikan, Isolo and Akure – make up the Akure kingdom in the Akure South Local Government Area of the state as they are located within Akure metropolis and it is hard to differentiate between the communities. Yet another version said the Isikan people originally came to Akure to take refuge and were later allowed to stay there permanently and earn their living under the paramount rulership of the Akure monarch.
The indigenes noted that as far as the chieftaincy matter was concerned, Isikan was an autonomous community and could relate with the state government on any issue that concerned it and not with the Deji. Condemning the action of Oba Aladetoyinbo, the Elemo of Isikan land and head of the kingmakers in the community, High Chief Olashinde Abidakun, called on Governor Rotimi Akeredolu to caution the Deji so as to prevent bloody communal clashes in Akure kingdom, and described the action of the paramount ruler as an affront on the state government, which had recognised the Iralepo as an oba.
However, Oba Aladetoyinbo, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Michael Adeyeye, said the action he took was in order and did not in any way contravene the existing law of the land on the chieftaincy matter.
