Umahi makes U-turn
Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi on Tuesday called for a truce with the media.
The governor was criticised by the media, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association and senior lawyers for barring two reporters from covering the state and for threatening journalists. He had in a broadcast announced the ban of The Sun and Vanguard correspondents Chijioke Agwu and Peter Okutu over reports he described as false.
Umahi’s critics said he should have exercised his right of reply or explored other legal remedies rather than acting undemocratically. In a broadcast on Tuesday, he urged the media to collaborate with him in moving the state forward. He added: “I am asking everybody to disregard what has happened because we are all partners in progress. Let us work together.
“I specifically asked that The Sun and Vanguard reporters be invited. As a father, when you beat a child with one hand, you bring the child back with another hand.“Nobody said you should do preferential reporting, nobody said you should not report the truth because our state is peculiar.
