An Uber-style bus service proposed for Adelaide is criticised by union officials, who say drivers will be sitting around effectively waiting for phone calls.

An Uber-style bus service proposed for Adelaide has been slammed by union officials, who say drivers will be sitting around"effectively waiting for phone calls" and subsidised by taxpayers.

Passengers within operational zones would be able to order a bus pick-up through an app and join other passengers on an undesignated route customised to their demands. But Matt Burnell from the Transport Workers Union said the service would be less predictable than traditional buses for passengers who, for example, might want to be picked up at 8:30am for a 9:00am appointment.

"And are we going to have drivers sitting around waiting for hours potentially to pick up one patron?", where some 20 on-demand zones are active across greater Sydney and the regions. "There is always going to be a cost factor involved in supplying a public transport system," Mr Burnell said.On-demand bus services are not new and have been in place in Australia and overseas for decades.
