Ironman Ireland have released a statement to confirm the tragic news after two competitors died in separate incidents while taking part in a swim in Cork this morning
The two men taking part in a 1.7km swim when they got into difficulties. Read more: Young boy who died after being struck by a car remembered for his smile and warm personality The swim was originally meant to be 3.8km but the distance was shortened to 1.7km.A garda investigation is currently under way.
"During the swim portion of Sunday's race, safety personnel provided immediate medical attention upon recognising the athletes were in need of assistance," it read. "We thank the safety personnel and first responders who worked quickly to provide the athletes with medical assistance."The half triathlon was postponed due to Storm Betty because of debris left along some of the course routes.
