The rescued aid workers are staff of Family Health International, , an international non-governmental organization providing humanitarian support to Internally Displaced Persons, and resettled communities in Borno and other states within the northeast region.

Sources also told Zagazola Makama, a security analyst in the Lake Chad region that, the victims jumped out of one of the vehicles of the terrorists and quickly identified themselves to the troops while one other staff ran into the bush amidst heavy shootings.
