A Magistrate Court in Abia State has remanded the traditional ruler of Okai Item and two others in custody over the alleged murder of a 20-year-old man.
A Magistrate Court in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State ordered the detention of Eze James Ogbonna, the traditional ruler of Okai Item, along with Igwe Anyim and Ndukwe Sunday Igara, at the Nigeria Correctional Centre in Umuahia. The trio are accused of being involved in the alleged murder of 20-year-old Ndukwe Isaac, who was reportedly killed by an enraged mob from the community. The deceased's father, Mr.
Isaac Maduka, a resident of Umuikpa Akanu, had publicly appealed for justice following the incident which took place on January 28th. During the court proceedings, Magistrate Elizabeth presided over the case and instructed the prosecuting attorney to transfer the case file to the Department of Public Prosecutions. Despite the prosecution counsel, U.Ekpo, arguing that he had already submitted the necessary information to the court, he ultimately complied with the magistrate's order in the interest of maintaining public peace. Ekpo emphasized the prosecution's commitment to the case by filing information with a high court, asserting that this would allow the defendants to appear and enter a plea. However, J. Osisiogu, the defense counsel, countered that the prosecution counsel had failed to provide any information to any of the defendants, even up until the proceedings on Thursday. The case is ongoing and the defendants remain in custody
