He stated, “I am a family man. I have mature children, three of whom are in higher institutions. I am often careful of how I speak with them because I cannot allow someone I am old enough to be his father to harass or oppress me at the park. If there is a misunderstanding between them and a driver, they can throw the driver out of the park and there is nothing anybody can do about it. That’s why drivers are being careful. No one wants to lose his means of livelihood.

He added that at Oshodi, they pay N50 per bus for ‘offloading passengers and turning’ regardless of the number of trips per day. He said, “The touts maltreat us and when we report them to the police, there is usually nothing done to them. Drivers are suffering and are only managing the situation. Many of us pay in installments for our vehicles. Another thing is that the touts beat us up sometimes. Government should help us out.’’

Dehinde further explained that since the levies were becoming unbearable, they had to shift the burden on their passengers. He added that the multiple levies were responsible for hike in transport fares. For another commuter, Bolanle Israel, the state government needed to look at the issue, adding that it was the cause of spending too much while moving across the state.

Edward said, “What I will say about that is the parties involved; government, drivers and the Park and Garage Management should sort things out. They should also consider that we are trying to manage the country the way it is. They should reach an agreement that will benefit us too.”Efforts to get the reaction of the Secretary, Lagos State Parks Management Committee, Dr. Taiwo Salaam, on the matter proved abortive.
