The Tokyo 2020 Olympics, after a two-week intense competition among 206 countries including Nigeria, with 11,091 athletes, came to a close on Sunday, August 8, 2021. The next host city for the 2024 Olympics is the idyllic city of Paris in France. Let it be revealed that Nigeria merely sent 60 athletes to the Tokyo Olympics. What a low number of athletes by the Giant of Africa!
In my view, it indeed was a spectacular, entertaining and successful Olympics, in spite of the delay, restrictions imposed and inconveniences placed on the athletes by the International Olympic Committee and host country, Japan, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic that continues to ravage the world. I commend the host country for a well-organised Games. But, I am disappointed with the woeful performance by Team Nigeria, which I would like to get off my chest.
Nigeria is always having difficulties of getting over the hump every four years. It has become an Olympic syndrome for Nigeria – the woeful performance. Again, in Tokyo, Team Nigeria miserably faltered. Imagine some Nigerian athletes protested against the government and NOC in Tokyo. It is a shame that Nigeria was only capable of winning two medals . Think about the smallest country in the world, San Marino, with just a population of 34,000 people winning an Olympic medal. But, Nigeria, the Giant of Africa, with a population of over 202 million people, won just two medals. It is indeed ludicrous! Something is wrong somewhere!
What happened to the financial investments made by the government and the NOC to prepare the team and implement the plan for Tokyo 2020? The narratives about the poor treatment meted out to the Nigerian athletes in Tokyo are despicable and condemnable.
