The Nigerian Senate had in May passed the bill raising the retirement age of High Court judges to be at par with those of the Supreme Court.
has assented to a constitutional amendment bill harmonising the retirement age of judges across courts.
“President Tinubu signed into law the ‘Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 , 2023’ presented by the outgoing 9th National Assembly. The bill signed into law by Mr Tinubu on Thursday raised the retirement age of the judges of the lower courts from 65 to 70. This brings the retirement of the lower court judges to par with that of the judges of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court.
The State House statement said Thursday that President, while signing the bill, “pledged his administration’s dedication to strengthening the judiciary, ensuring the rule of law, and empowering judicial officers to execute their responsibilities effectively.”on 3 May, almost four weeks to the end of the tenure of then President Muhammadu Buhari.
