President Tinubu has requested the Senate to remove three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for alleged misconduct. The move has been commended by election observer group Yiaga Africa, who call for swift action to uphold accountability and trust in the electoral process.

President Bola Tinubu has requested the Senate to remove three Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for alleged misconduct. The letter, transmitted to the Senate on Wednesday, seeks the removal of Hudu Yunusa-Ari (Adamawa), Ike Uzochukwu (Abia), and Nura Ali (Sokoto). Yiaga Africa, an election observation group, has commended President Tinubu for his action, calling for the swift approval of his request.

They argue that the removal of these RECs is crucial to upholding accountability and reinforcing trust in the electoral process. Mr. Yunusa-Ari is accused of unlawfully declaring the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Aisha Dahiru, the winner of the Adamawa State governorship election before the process was concluded. Meanwhile, the Sokoto REC, Mr. Ali, and the Abia REC, Mr. Uzochukwu, were suspended for dereliction of duty. The federal government is currently prosecuting the Sokoto REC for alleged bribery and corruption related to the 2023 elections. Yiaga Africa urges the Senate to expedite the approval process and for the President to review the process of nominating RECs to prevent individuals of questionable character from being appointed. They also call on the Senate to strengthen its confirmation process to ensure due diligence in vetting candidates for INEC positions. The organisation emphasizes the need for future INEC appointments to strictly adhere to constitutional requirements of non-partisanship and unquestionable integrity.
