A rights group under the aegis of Education Rights Campaign (ERC) has described the Student Loan Act recently introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a market fundamentalist and anti-poor piece of legislation aimed at full commercialisation of public education. The group affirmed that those who have applauded the Act are either ignorant of the real consequences or are anti-poor and pro-capitalist elements who do not believe that education ought to be an inalienable right and not a privilege.

A rights group under the aegis of Education Rights Campaign has described the Student Loan Act recently introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration as a market fundamentalist and anti-poor piece of legislation aimed at full commercialisation of public education.

It added that the Act only takes care of tuition which is a fraction of the total payable fees by students in tertiary institutions. This was made known in a statement jointly signed by Ogunjimi Isaac, Deputy National Coordinator of the organization, and Adaramoye Michael Lenin, National Mobilization Officer.

In the statement, the group called on all Nigerian students, parents, civil society organisations, education workers unions, Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress to reject the Student Loan Act.The statement reads in part,"In fact, the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students , which is supposed to be the voice of students, at a recent meeting with the President, poured encomium on President Tinubu for signing the bill.

The group described the Act as a fraudulent contrivance by elements who do not have the interest of the poor and indigent at heart and “whose only real achievements would be an increase in the cost of education through the introduction of tuition fees and subjection of loan beneficiaries to lifelong indebtedness and misery.
