They singled out the choice of Bello Matawalle and Atiku Bagudu, former governors of Zamfara and Kebbi States, respectively.

Transparency International and other civil society organisations have criticised President Bola Tinubu for nominating former governors accused of corruptly enriching themselves while in office to serve in his cabinet.

Matawalle was in May accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of diverting over N70bn from the state’s coffers while Bagudu’s alleged financial misdeeds dated back to his relationship with the late military dictator, General Sani Abacha, whose financial crimes against the country have yet to be fully atoned for.

But in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Transparency International in Nigeria, Musa Rafsanjani, said with the nomination of ex-governors with graft cases, the President had shown that he did not care about the public outcry against corruption. “This was clear when he insisted on having a Senate President who is facing corruption charges and investigations by anti-corruption agencies. Despite evidence of monumental looting and abuse of office, he insisted that must be the Senate President and he got his wish.
