A three-step guide to slashing your petrol costs this Easter

Lucky the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has launched "price cycle" reports to stop profiteering at peak petrol use periods.

Petrol prices hit $1.445 a litre in the week leading up to the Easter holidays, rising more than 3.5 cents in just a seven-day period to a 22-week high. However, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane saw pump prices lift by 7 cents to 21 cents a litre in the week before the Easter holidays, according to Commsec analysis. It hit $1.445 a litre last week. That’s a 22-week high, as many of us were about to bundle our families into the car for an Easter escape.

What is consistent is that one or more retailer will force a new cycle by sharply increasing prices, which other petrol retailers follow.“It’s not uncommon for drivers to notice prices jumping 20 cents or more a litre in a very short period of time, and the price you see being charged on the way to work can be very different to the one on the way home,” ACCC Commissioner Mick Keogh says.

I spotted a difference in price of 8 cents a litre on opposite sides of the road to the other day. Naturally, motorists couldn’t cut across to the divide to the cheap side., where users report what petrol stations are charging, shows similar variations in many metropolitan areas just before Easter. Indeed, two stations not even one kilometre apart had a 22-cent a litre differential.

OPEC-Russian production cuts and supply disruptions in Libya, Sudan and Venezuela, have seen crude oil prices lift for six consecutive weeks to be up 40 per cent so far this year. Unload those bikes, boards and golf clubs from your car once you arrive at your destination, too, so you’re not eating up fuel zipping around town. Now it’s cooled down, skip the air conditioning at speeds below 72kph and wind down the windows instead. Above that speed, a U.S. study by the Society of Automotive Engineers says the increased drag cancels out the air-con savings.
