Joe Quesada's cover for Ultimate Spider-Man #160 has become iconic for its tribute to Peter Parker's death, but a subtle detail makes it even sadder.
An iconic image featuring the death of Spider-Man hid a subtle, heart-breaking message that fans never even noticed. The death of Spider-Man in Marvel's Ultimate Universe has become one of the most well-known moments in recent years. Ultimate Spider-Man #160 by Brian Michael Bendis, Mark Bagley and Andy Lanning not only saw this iteration of Peter Parker meet his fate but also paved the way for Miles Morales' debut.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Artist Joe Quesada crafted a memorable cover for Ultimate Spider-Man #160 that features Peter reuniting with his Uncle Ben in heaven as the two walk off together with Ben telling him, "You did good, kid." However, it turns out there's more to the story than fans thought.
In a blog post on his Substack page, Quesada explains that one fan pointed out that while they liked the artwork, "it looked like Peter was grabbing Uncle Ben's butt." However, when looking closer, it's clear that he's actually grasping at his coat. Quesada's reasoning for this was that it was his "way of conveying regret for leaving his Aunt May behind and all the people he'll never be able to help again.
Miles Morales Perfectly Alleviates Peter's Worries in Death However, this doesn't mean that Peter ends up leaving a void in New York. His death actually inspires Miles Morales' origin as he takes up the new role of Spider-Man following his own encounter with a radioactive spider. Even if Peter left everyone behind in death, his actions continue to live on through Miles' role as the Ultimate Universe's newest spider hero.
If Peter Parker were able to see what Miles would become, perhaps his grip on Uncle Ben would be a bit looser. However, this is well before Miles first puts on the mask, so it makes sense why this subtle artistic choice was made. It's a heart-wrenching little detail that makes Peter's exit from the Ultimate storyline all the more upsetting. Spider-Man will always be a hero who puts others ahead of himself in order to be the best neighborhood hero he can be.
