A third suspected methane gas leak at a school in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has sent students and staff to the hospital, renewing concerns over recurring emissions and public health risks in the community.
A recurring crisis of gas leak s has once again struck Ijebu-Ode , Ogun State , causing fresh panic among residents after a suspected emission at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in the Epe Garage area led to numerous students and staff needing urgent medical care.
The victims experienced symptoms such as breathing difficulties, weakness, and other related health issues, prompting their immediate transfer to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode. This latest event constitutes the third such mysterious gas leak reported within a two-month span, intensifying anxieties about the potential long-term health consequences for the local population. Earlier incidents in April and May had already resulted in the hospitalization of approximately 40 and 100 students respectively, highlighting a dangerous pattern.
According to the Ogun State Government, monitoring equipment deployed in the locality has identified methane gas as the probable culprit behind these emissions. A resident, speaking anonymously, detailed how the most recent leak unfolded during school hours when a strong, offensive odour permeated the school grounds, leading to widespread discomfort, respiratory distress, and panic. Several affected individuals were rushed to the hospital, with some losing consciousness, and many were still under treatment as of Wednesday.
The resident stressed the urgent need for authorities to uncover the root cause, noting growing public concern over repeated exposures. The State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed awareness of the incident and asserted that monitoring devices had pinpointed the emission source to an area behind the school. He stated that the government is taking appropriate measures to mitigate the situation and prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, John Eko, National Coordinator of the Food and Farmers Rights Campaign, appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to secure a permanent solution, describing the recurrence as alarming and warning of unknown long-term health effects from prolonged exposure. Eko underscored the necessity of deploying all available resources to identify the cause and protect residents' wellbeing
