FOR liberals and diplomats around the world, their worst nightmares are unfolding in Afghanistan. The predicted apocalyptic implosion of the landlocked central Asian country into another cycle of chaos, and brutal medieval theocratic rule following the pull-out of the United States military and its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies is ripening with stunning rapidity.

Costly external interventions, the most recent being the 20-year-long US-led coalition, have failed to push the Afghan majority from a conservative, tribal-based society, and religious fanaticism to embrace liberal democratic values, or modern concepts of universal education, fundamental freedoms, and the rights of women.

The world is in trouble. The mountainous country has endured invasions throughout its sad history; most recently by Britain in the 19th century, the defunct Soviet Union, and the NATO coalition in the 20th and 21st centuries respectively. All left the country untamed.
