More than ever before, Nigerian players have developed the hunger of playing abroad even before tasting domestic football in the domestic topflight – the Nigeria Professional Football League.

According to a report in Africa Facts Zone, 725 players were transferred from Nigeria to various parts of the world in 2022. The footballers were transferred for a whopping $104.2m to place Nigeria first in Africa and fifth in the world among exporters of footballers.

Argentine striker, Carlos Tevez, in January 2018, returned to his childhood club Boca Juniors for the third time after many years in Europe and China. The former Manchester United striker won two Primera Division titles with the club in 2018 and 2020, scoring 22 goals in 66 appearances. PUNCH Sports Extra spotlights some of the names who have played abroad and currently playing in the 2022/23 abridged NPFL season…Former Sunshine Stars striker, Alimi, joined 3SC at the start of the 2023 abridged season after returning home, with a half-of-the-season stint with Remo Stars in 2022.

After surprisingly parting ways with Remo, Alimi reunited with coach Gbenga Ogunbote at 3SC, but he’s yet to make an appearance in the NPFL for the Oluyole Warriors due to injury.Lobi Stars goalkeeper, Daniel, was part of Nigeria’s team at the 2015 African Games and 2016 Olympics.
